The Ras Nungwi - Zanzibar’s little known hideaway
By | November 11, 2007

Zanzibar is a delightful archipelago about thirty kilometres off the coast of East Africa, which with its soft beaches of coral sand, gently swaying palm trees, and turquoise waters, is a heaven for those who love the perfect relaxing beach holiday. Officially part of Tanzania, the archipelago is a paradise of many small islands and two large ones: Zanzibar Island, and Pemba Island.
On the northern tip of Zanzibar Island you will find the Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel, which is a small luxury hotel, with only thirty-two rooms, situated on a remote expanse of beautiful beach. The hotel offers a real beach haven, providing a relaxing atmosphere with conscientious service. The hotel has its own lagoon which is protected by a thriving coral reef, and the area is ideal for water sports, including deep sea fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling, all of which are on offer.
The rooms at the Ras Nungwi are simply but stylishly designed, with a modern, upbeat decor, and air conditioning and fans to keep you cool during those warm nights. The deluxe and super deluxe chalets are all detached or semi-detached, and have their own private balcony with magnificent views across the bay.
The hotel is wonderfully laid out across floral gardens interlaced with sandy paths on an idyllic stretch of unspoilt beach. From the spaciously laid out thatched restaurant and bar you can take in fabulous all round views, while enjoying spicy cuisine and sipping drinks. There are a number of little secluded areas which make for great retreats for guests to relax and enjoy their surroundings. The hotel has received rave reviews for its location, layout, decor, food, and service.
Zanzibar is famous for the delicious spices that it produces, including cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and pepper – so if you come here for a holiday you can get well stocked up, and sets of spices make great gifts for those at home!
